On Commenting

| | 5 peeps are talkin'.

I was told -- somewhat surlily (is that a word?) -- that people can't comment on my blog. I checked by, well, trying to comment. Sure 'nuf, leaving a comment directs you to a "Movable Type An Error Occurred" screen. No explanation. No apology. Nothing.

In fact, the comment does get through -- where it may end up being scrubbed as spam.

The really really bad news here is that actual real spam manages to get posted with no issues. Legit comments sometimes get through, sometimes go to my spam bucket.

I did nothing to the blog 'ware, this time. I did not install any new plug-ins, nor upgrade to the new version. I was just sitting here, waiting for comments.

<sigh>

I'm looking for a cause and for a solution. Sorry 'bout this. Feel free to e-mail me at lizarddreams -at- gmail if you have an overwhelming urge to say something. If you do comment, it should show up somewhere and I'll make a point of checking the spam folder BEFORE it gets scrubbed by the system, just in case.

"surlily (is that a word?)"

Dunno, you could say "in a surly manner" or "by a surly bastard", nyet?

"I'm looking for a cause and for a solution."

I wish I could help. Really. I don't have a blog because the blogware "out there" doesn't meet my standards. I tried blogger and I thought it sucked.

I'm writing my own blogware / forumware as a plugin for my existing website software, and once it's ready I'll make it available to a few folks, but when I got serious about the plugin stuff what I recognized is that I need a 'beta' mode, and I need to be able to keep test / beta / production modes going simumltaneously and then I got into code promotion / regression issues and from there to backup / recovery issues and things like having to rework my directory structure and it goes on and on. It'll happen if I don't croak off first, but apparently not quickly.

Especially since I spend so much time doing other things. Go figure, life goes forward as it will.

I checked my blogware spam folder and, sure 'nuf, two comments were in there that should not have been. I moved 'em back out again.

My blog is getting lots of spam comments. I tried to block it, but those plug-ins were worse than the spam itself. Maybe just the way I installed them, or set them up, or whatever is what sucked.

Anyway, MovableType has a new version that's supposed to be even better at spam filtering. I'll upgrade maybe this weekend.

You just need a new plugin... you didn't install it correctly... it can't talk to this other chunk of software... new version available day after tomorrow...

Those are a few of the reasons I've done things the way I have. I've never been very good at installing other peoples' stuff or hooking it together, or maybe I'm too experienced or just plain nuts.

I don't use anybody else's software any more than I have to. That means my server runs linux and Apache and PHP. That's it. No mySQL, no blah blah blah, and one of these days I'll get a Mac and rewrite my stuff in C and lose the dependency on Apache.

It just pisses me off to have to depend on other peoples' software, I want my stuff to run.

Sorry for the rant. Best luck with Their Next Version.

"Movable Type Pro"?

Did they malfunction you into paying for that next upgrade or were you already on "Pro"?

boots yelled: "Did they malfunction you into paying for that next upgrade"

Nope. It's free for personal use.

Still hosed, though. I may have to export the entries (etc.) delete the blog, and start it from scratch.
